John Tate

March 20, 1942 — March 12, 2020

John R. Tate of Huntsville, formerly of Pulaski, Tennessee, passed away at the age of 77 on Thursday, March 12, 2020. Mr. Tate was a 1960 graduate of Giles County High School and student body president. He was the founder and owner of John Tate Real Estate and Construction; a former president of the Huntsville Board of Realtors, a charter member of the Multiple Listing Service, and he served on the Huntsville City Planning Commission under Mayor Joe Davis. He was a Christian and served as a deacon in the Baptist Church. He was a member of Whitesburg Baptist Church and taught the Senior Adult Life Group Class. John enjoyed playing sports for civic and church league teams. He coached and supported his son and grandsons in basketball and baseball. The Atlanta Braves and Alabama Crimson Tide were his favorite teams. Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Linda Faye Bass Tate; along with their three children, Lisa Ann Tate Walden (Jim), Lynn Tate Hartselle (Larry), Jason Patrick Tate (Aynsley); grandchildren, Chad Anderson (Brittany), Clay Anderson, Lindsay Hartselle Hamric (Carter), Lacy Hartselle, Luke Hartselle, Connor P. Tate; great-grandchildren, Nash and Grady Anderson, and Ellis and Essie Tate Hamric; as well as Ava, Kristin, and Jameson Walden; his brother, Tom Tate (Lou), his aunts, Mary Frances White and Ethel Inman; sisters-in-law, Alice Gooch and Peggy Bass; and many beloved cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew and Geneva Inman Tate. Visitation will be on Sunday, March 15 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Berryhill Funeral Home in Huntsville, with funeral services at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, March 16 at The Chapel at Whitesburg Baptist Church South Campus, 7300 Whitesburg Drive; with Dr. Jimmy Jackson officiating. Graveside service will follow at 3:00 p.m. at Giles Memory Gardens in Pulaski, Tennessee. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations be made in Mr. Tate's memory to the Homebound Ministry of Whitesburg Baptist Church, The Hacienda of Hope Children's Home in Ecuador (hoh.ec), Samaritan's Purse, or St. Judes Childrens Research Hospital.
